Depending upon where you are renting the vehicle, Dollar offers the following Optional Protection Packages at the time of rental: Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), Personal Effects Coverage (PEC), Emergency Sickness Protection (ESP), and Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS). The cost, coverage, provider and availability vary by location, vehicle category and rate. Please refer to the location’s terms and conditions to determine whether LIS is required for travel from the USA into Canada and the cost of such coverage.

The optional products offered by the rental company many duplicate coverage provided by the renter’s personal automobile insurance or insurance the renter may have through another source. Purchase of optional products is not required to rent the vehicle in Canada or the U.S. Separate brochures available at the rental location summarize the optional products. We charge a per day fee for each day, or part of a day, the vehicle is rented for any optional products you select.

This is a summary only and is subject to specific benefits, exclusions, limitations and exceptions of the Liability Insurance Supplement, Personal Accident and Personal Effects and Emergency Protection Insurance policies (which are available for inspection upon request).

Loss Damage Waiver ("LDW") – Canada and U.S. Rentals:
If the renter purchases one of the optional LDW plans, Dollar will agree to waive the renter's responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle in full or in part (depending on the LDW plan accepted). LDW is not insurance or an insurance product.

LDW does not apply if: (1) the renter uses the vehicle in violation of the rental agreement; (2) the renter fails to remove the keys, or close and lock all windows, doors and trunk, and the vehicle is stolen or vandalized; (3) the renter fails to notify us and the police immediately after the loss; and (4) the renter fails to pay the charges under the rental agreement; or (5) other exceptions as allowed by the applicable state or provincial law.

Before deciding whether to purchase LDW, the renter may wish to determine whether their own automobile insurance or credit card agreement provides coverage for rental vehicle damage or loss and determine the amount of the deductible under your own insurance coverage. The purchase of LDW is not mandatory. LDW is not insurance.
Personal Protection Plan ("P&P") Canada and U.S. Rentals: P&P includes Personal Accident Insurance ("PAI") and Personal Effects Insurance (“PEC”) and where offered must be purchased together.

PAI provides benefits to the renter and the renter's passengers for accidental medical expenses, ambulance expenses and accidental death benefits during the rental. If this optional coverage is purchased by a renter, the renter is covered twenty-four hours a day for all accidents, whether the renter is actually in the rental vehicle or not at the time of the accident. Passengers in a Dollar vehicle are only covered for accidents occurring while the passengers occupy the Dollar vehicle.

PEC insures the personal effects of the renter and any member of the renter's immediate family traveling with the renter up to the limits of liability provided. A member of a renter's immediate family must permanently reside in the renter's household. If this optional coverage is purchased by the renter, PEC covers only personal effects with which the renter or immediate family member are traveling. PEC pays covered claims even if the renter's homeowner's policy provides coverage.

Liability Insurance Supplement ("LIS") – U.S. Rentals
Provides liability protection up to $1,000,000 for claims brought by others

LIS also provides you with up to $1,000,000 in coverage for combined bodily injury and/or property damage claims, should you be harmed by an uninsured/underinsured driver. Prices vary by location. Pricing of LIS for a specific rental will be provided at time of reservation. LIS is not available on rentals in Canada.

Emergency Sickness Protection ("ESP"): U.S. Rentals
ESP is available to all renters who are non-U.S. citizens including Canadians who possess valid non-U.S. passports at the time of rental. ESP provides certain medical benefits for some sicknesses that may occur during rental periods of thirty days or less. ESP also covers individuals possessing valid non-U.S. passports at the time of rental traveling with the renter. Benefits include up to $10,000 per person for reasonable and customary cost of necessary medical care for covered sickness, including (A) medical or surgical treatment; (B) hospital services, supplies, x-rays and laboratory fees; (C) local ambulance and (D) visits to a physician’s office, and are subject to a $100 deductible per person per sickness. ESP does not provide coverage for any sickness for which symptoms began or treatment received during the twelve months prior to the beginning of the rental period; expenses incurred outside of the U.S.; expenses for eyeglasses, contact lenses or hearing aids; losses incurred while participating in racing, professional club, intercollegiate or interscholastic sports; losses from an accident, cardiovascular disease, cancers tumors, tuberculosis, organ transplant, congenital conditions, deviated septum, cosmetic surgery, dental care, sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, fertility/infertility treatment, pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion, and emotional or mental disorders of any kind; and losses while traveling against the advice of a physician or while traveling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment. ESP does not apply in Mexico.

Mexico Insurance: U.S. Rentals
Vehicles rented in the United States may not be driven into Mexico without obtaining Mexico Insurance. Mexico Insurance provides a customer with liability and damage protection on the rental vehicle to be in compliance with Mexican law when visiting Mexico. The Mexico Insurance policy permits the customer to travel up to 250 miles south of the U.S./Mexico border in the rented vehicle. The policy provides coverage for liability to third parties arising from the use of the rental vehicle (to the applicable limit of liability), collision and comprehensive coverage for the rental vehicle (subject to applicable deductibles) and limited medical expense coverage. Coverage is subject to all limits, terms, limitations and exclusions in the Mexico Insurance policy. Mexico Insurance is available only at select locations in the U.S.

What Options do I have to Purchase Fuel (Fuel Purchase Option)?

Customers may purchase a tank of fuel (accept the Fuel Purchase Option) at the time of rental at a local competitive price, which eliminates the need for the customer to refuel before returning. All vehicles are rented with a full tank of fuel and there is no refund for unused fuel. If the customer does not purchase the full tank of fuel from Dollar at the time of rental, they can return the vehicle with a full tank and must show a fuel purchase receipt within 10 kilometres of the return location.

What is EVPO (EV Purchase Option) – Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Now when you rent an electric vehicle, we offer three great options for recharging an EV.

  • EV Purchase Option (EVPO):
Purchase this option to pay for the amount of charge in the EV battery at time of pickup, at a rate similar to local charging stations plus a small fee. Then you can return the EV at any battery level. No refunds for the charge left in the battery at time of return.
  • EV Service Charge (EVSC): If you do not select EVPO and do not recharge the vehicle yourself, Hertz will charge you for the difference in battery level at pickup and return, at the same energy rate as EVPO but with a higher fee.
  • You recharge: Pay no additional cost if you return the EV at the same battery level it had at pickup — but you never have to bring it back over 75%.
The state of charge or battery level of the vehicle is described in Kilowatt-hours (kWh), a measure of electricity equivalent to 1 kilowatt (1,000 watts) of power expended for 1 hour.
What Options do I have to purchase Upgrades?

Renters may upgrade to another class of vehicle at the time of rental subject to availability. An additional daily charge will apply.

Instead all charges are billed by the 407 ETR to the registered vehicle owner. If you choose to use the 407 ETR, you will be charged for all of the applicable toll charges billed to your rental vehicle by the 407 ETR, which are based on distance traveled, time of day and week, account fees and non-transponder fees, plus harmonized sales tax. You will also be charged an administration fee of $14.00 CAD per rental. Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Canada Inc. will automatically charge your credit card and you should expect to be billed approximately one month after the vehicle rental.

In the U.S. PlatePass is an electronic prepaid toll pass purchased at the rental counter. It offers worry free, convenient 24-hour unlimited access to tollways, including express lanes and those converting to a cashless operation.

If you decline to purchase the PlatePass All-Inclusive Service, you will be required to pay all unpaid toll occurences and toll violations (including violations captured by camera) charged by the toll authority plus an administration fee per toll occurrence or toll violation. Please be advised that some toll roads are managed electronically and have no manned booths.

Do you offer Hand Controls and Spinner Knobs for the Disabled Driver?

If the renter will require driving aids to operate the vehicle, please contact us at 1-800-847-4389 within Canada and the U.S. This will ensure availability of equipment and all Dollar personnel to install such equipment prior to the rental. Dollar will provide and install hand controls upon the request of any renter with a disability who can operate a motor vehicle with the aid of hand controls, subject to availability of hand controls, vehicles and trained installers. When a reservation is booked at least 24 hours in advance of the rental, confirmation of the availability of hand controls will be made at the time of the rental. Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate any request for hand controls for a reservation with less than 24 hours' notice. There is no additional charge for hand controls, including one-way rentals. Customers who request hand controls must present a valid driver's license and satisfy Dollar’s minimum age requirements and other driver qualification requirements at the time of rental.
Steering wheel spinner knobs are also available at the request of a renter with a disability, subject to the same restrictions and criteria as are set forth above as to hand controls.

I’m disabled, can I rent a Dollar vehicle but allow another person to drive the vehicle for me?

If a travelling companion shall serve as the driver during the rental, please advise the Dollar representative at the time of rental and pick-up. There is no additional charge for an additional authorized driver for non-driving disabled renters. The additional authorized driver must appear at the time of rental, present a valid driver’s license and satisfy Dollar’s minimum age requirements. The individual with the disability shall be considered as the Renter and must present a qualified method of payment and otherwise meet credit qualifications requirements at the time of rental, along with photo identification.

Do you remove Centre and Rear Van Seats for the disabled renter?

Customers with disabilities who use service animals or personal aids such as wheel chairs or motorized scooters may require additional space for storage. To provide space for the service animal or to facilitate the storage of personal aids in rented vans and minivans, Dollar will remove the center and/or rear van seat at no charge if the vehicle is returned to the renting location or a different rental location. If the vehicle is returned to a different rental location, the removed seat will be shipped to the rental location where the van is returned and a shipping fee for the actual cost of shipping the seat will be assessed.

How do I change the time or location of my vehicle return?

For rentals in Canada and the U.S., please contact our On-Rent Helpdesk at 1-866-434-2226 and listen carefully for all options. Select Option 2: Currently have vehicle, then Option 1: if your need to change the time and location of your return. For International rentals, please contact the renting location or the toll free number that appears on the rental agreement.

What is the policy with respect to After Hours returns?

At many locations you can leave the vehicle in the rental car parking lot after hours. Please note the mileage on the rental contract jacket along with the fuel level reading. You may leave the printed rental agreement inside the vehicle and drop the keys in the after hours key return box. Note: If you are returning the vehicle to a location that is closed, all charges will continue to accrue until the location reopens for business.

Will I be charged if I bring the vehicle back before or after the return time noted on the rental agreement?

Yes, you will be charged for each hour or part of an hour in excess of the time you were required to return the rental vehicle.

In the U.S., Dollar has introduced Change Fees to reduce last minute disruptions to vehicle planning. Early Return Fee: if you did not prepay your rental, and return the Dollar vehicle more than 24 hours before the return time indicated on your rental agreement you will pay for the days used plus a $25.00 USD charge to compensate Dollar for our inability to rent your vehicle during the remaining time of your reservation. You can reduce this fee by calling the On Rent Help Desk at 1-866-434-2226 to update the date and time of your return. Late Return Fee: We reserve the right to charge $16.00 USD per day (maximum of 5 days) to compensate us in part for the costs we incur to finding an alternative vehicle to satisfy our next booking for your vehicle. You can reduce this fee by calling the On Rent Help Desk at 1-866-434-2226 to update the date and time of your return. Return Change Fee: Applies if you change the location or date/time of your rental and proactively notify Dollar by calling the on-rent help desk at 1-866-434-2226. There is a nominal $10.00 USD fee associated with the change to your rental agreement.

Questions after your rental
Will I be subject to a refueling fee?

Customers who do not purchase our Fuel Purchase Option at the time of rental, must refuel within a 10 kilometre radius of the rental return facility and present a fuel receipt to avoid refueling charges. If the customer does not replace fuel used during the rental, a refueling fee will be assessed. The fuel charge is based on the estimated number of litres needed to refill the tank multiplied by the rate per litre charge specified on the rental agreement. Dollar locations may use different methods of estimating the number of litres needed to refill the tank and those methods of estimation necessarily rely on human judgement. Most Dollar locations estimate the number of litres needed to refill the tank either by 1) reading the fuel gauge to estimate the approximate amount of fuel needed to refill the tank (for example one half tank) and multiplying that number by the manufacturer’s specified fuel tank capacity, or 2) if the renter did not purchase and fuel during the rental, by reading the odometer to determine the amount of miles driven during the rental and dividing that number by the vehicle’s estimated fuel efficiency (litres per kilometre) based on the manufacturer’s fuel efficiency specifications. References herein to kilometres and litres shall be miles and gallons when renting in the U.S.

I am seeing a charge for a traffic ticket/parking violation on my credit card.

Toll violations, and vehicle citations at times do occur, and by contract, the renter is responsible for the payment of these charges, plus administrative costs per violation.

I was not stopped by a police officer, so why am I being charged for a ticket?

Some municipalities have adopted video radar services, allowing for moving violations to be captured by camera. The owner is identified by the license plate and notified by mail and billed for the infraction. As per the terms of the rental contract, these charges, plus an administrative fee per event, is billed to the credit card on file.

What is a cashless toll road?

In some Canadian provinces and U.S. states, as well as international destinations; there are cashless toll roads or bridge tolls, where there is no option to pay cash in a traditional tollbooth. The license plate of the vehicle without a registered toll pass is captured by a camera and the rental company is billed for the toll. As per the terms of the rental contract, these toll charges, plus an administrative fee per event, are billed to the credit card on file.

I received a letter in the mail about a toll charge applied to my account. I thought that the rental car company paid for the tolls?

In the U.S., only the PlatePass® toll service, when accepted at the counter, will allow for the prepayment of tolls where available. Otherwise, it is the responsibility of the renter to pay for toll and citation events during the rental; when the rental company, as vehicle owner, is notified of an unpaid event, the amount of the charge, plus penalties and administrative costs are applied to the card on record.

I believe I left something behind in the vehicle. Do you operate a Lost and Found?

I was involved in an accident, how do I file a damage or injury claim?

To report an accident, please complete a Vehicle Incident Report form and submit via email to hcmfirstnoticeofloss@hertz.com. The Form is available at the rental location, or in the glove box of the vehicle. Or here

What happens if the car is damaged, stolen or in an accident?

If the car is stolen or has been involved in an accident, first call the local police or appropriate law enforcement agency. Next, call the nearest office of the rental car company, give them your rental agreement or confirmation number and explain what has happened. If it's after hours, Dollar customers always can call toll free to 1-800-800-4000. You'll be led through the procedure to get you going again. Finally, call your own auto insurance company with information on the incident. Be sure to check with the rental company on their breakdown policy before you drive away.

Accidents and vehicle theft aren't something we like to think about, especially on a trip, but they can happen even to the most careful driver. Optional waivers (as outlined above) can be purchased to reduce or eliminate your financial exposure which could include the full value of the vehicle and lost rental revenue during its replacement period.
Be careful not to violate your car rental agreement by driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance, allowing an unauthorized personal to drive the vehicle, leaving the windows, doors or trunk unlocked, or leaving the keys in the ignition when parked. If the agreement if violated, it makes the waiver void. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all of the terms and conditions of the rental agreement.

Remember that, as the renter, you are liable for all parking and moving traffic violations, both domestic and international, so please drive safely and observe all ordinances.

How do I follow up on a claim?

If this is lost or not provided the customer can call 1-877-283-0898 - listen carefully for ALL options. Select the appropriate option (5) “to report an accident or if you need assistance with a damage or injury claim”.
